When an undead creature like a wight or a ghoul can no longer maintain a physical form, it sometimes degenerates into a mass of spiritual goo and becomes an ectoplasmal. Likewise, if an incorporeal spirit like a wraith or spectre somehow gains the ability to take physical form, the result is an ectoplasmal. Either way, this metaphysical entity can best be thought of as something between a physical creature and a bodiless spirit.
